Converse College was founded in 1889 by citizens of Spartanburg as an independent, residential, liberal arts college for women. The college is guided by the founder's vision of preparing women to be leaders in an ever-changing world. Converse draws much of its character from its Christian heritage, and much of its strength from a long-standing dedication to a student-led Honor Tradition.
Converse's educational experience emphasizes academic challenges, leadership development, study travel, internships, and service learning. The College of Arts and Sciences awards bachelor's degrees in 33 academic areas. The Petrie School of Music prepares aspiring musicians with a solid foundation in music theory, composition, history, and performance. Converse II, an undergraduate program for women age 24 and older, provides flexible course schedules and reduced tuition in order to help women balance their families and careers with Converse. The coeducational graduate program offers advanced degrees in music, education, and the liberal arts. An average undergraduate student body of 750 and graduate student body of 800 allows for small classes, with a student:faculty ratio of 9:1.
Students are encouraged to be involved through campus and residential life programs, NCAA Division II athletics, and sixty student organizations. Student self-governance, which is central to life at Converse, is structured through a student government association that is the second oldest in the Southeast.
